We’re finding our stride….
Does anyone else feel like life is standing still, and yet the days are rushing by? We’re already halfway through February, and there are exciting things happening for our club. With Two Oceans and Comrades now officially cancelled for this year, we anxiously await the updated race calendar from CGA. Mel and Andre are hard at work planning a few challenges to keep us motivated, so don’t pack those running shoes away just yet!
Thank you to everyone who has paid their membership fees for 2021. Your continued support will ensure that our club remains viable in what are proving to be incredibly challenging times.
Given the current economic situation, and that there are no official races for the foreseeable future, the committee reviewed the club’s monthly expenses, and determined where we can make savings while ensuring the club remains sustainable without having to dip into our limited resources. Our club fees have been reduced. While you have the option to purchase your ASA licence, it is important to know that your ASA licence provides you with medical insurance not only at races, but also while you are training.
To renew your membership, visit our website http://www.sunninghillstriders.co.za/membership and follows the links.
We are awaiting confirmation from CGA as to when we may collect the 2021 licences. We will notify you as soon as these become available.
You would have received an email and WhatsApp about our club survey. The purpose of the survey is to determine the needs and expectations of Sunninghill Striders (past and present), given the impact of COVID-19. The Committee will value a few minutes of your time by participating in this survey as your feedback will be valuable in helping us meet your needs during this COVID-19 period that is likely to last for several months.
Click the following link, and please ensure you click the SUBMIT button at the end of the survey: https://www.orgdia.co.za/survey/SSRC21/needscovid.htm
You do not have to share your details, but if you choose to participate and you choose to share your CGA license number and cell phone number, you will be entered into a draw for prizes provided by our sponsors. Please complete the survey by 28 February 2021.
Completing this survey will take less time than it would take to run up time trial hill!
Tuesday Weekly Time Trials
Our Tuesday evening 4km and 8km time trials take place at 18h00 from St Peter’s Church. There is currently construction work happening at the Church, but you can access the paedestrian gate to the start of time trial.
We have been notified of incidences of car break-ins in the Church parking lot. Please keep all valuables out of sight, and ensure your car is locked.
Please remember to wear light-coloured clothing and reflective belts and/or vests. Headlamps are compulsory during the winter months. Ensure that you obey the rules of the road and run facing the traffic.
As per the existing COVID-19 restrictions, please maintain social distancing and ensure you wear a mask before and after your run.
Given the current restrictions, we are not able to have our monthly social events, but these will resume as soon as it is safe to do so.
SSRC Pirates 21km Bus
For the first time this year, we will be able to run in our club colours. SSRC has been allocated a 6am start time on Saturday, 20th February to run the 21km Pirates route. We will meet at the start on Cruden Bay Road and set off promptly at 6am.
As the route is officially unsupported due to COVID restrictions, we have arranged for 3 water points at approximately 6km, 11km, 16km. There will be limited water, Energade, jelly sweets and salted crisps. We are aware that there may be many other runners on the route, so please be kind to the waterpoint volunteers as they do their best to ensure everyone is catered for. For this reason, we ask that you please wear your SSRC club kit so that it is easy to identify our club members.
We are extremely grateful to our members who have volunteered to man these points: Jade Taylor, Janine Goosen, Megan Schlange, Tracey Riley and Embark, Werner Husi, Liesl van Rooyen and Juel Barnett.
PLEASE NOTE that the route is not marked. Find a friend and stick together. The route map is available at https://pirates21.co.za/route/. Please print this or upload the GPX files to your watch.
Updated Club Website
An unforeseen, but necessary, expense for this year will be the rebuilding of our club website. The platform used to develop the original website will become obsolete this year, so this is an expense that is unavoidable.
This give us a chance to give our website a more modern look, as well as taking the membership process online as much as possible. Thank you to our new club member, Kirsty McLeod-Grobler, for assisting us with this project.
If you have any photos from races and club socials and events from 2019 and 2020, please email these to email@example.com do we can include these in our gallery.
As part of the upgrade, we will be cleaning up our mailing list to only include 2021 paid-up club members. If you have not joined the club for the 2021 season, this will be the last newsletter you receive.
We’re excited to announce that Brooks is our club sponsor for 2021. This partnership ensures our club members have access to shoes and apparel of the highest quality, as well as a chance to win a pair of Brooks running shoes at our monthly time trial socials. Paid-up club members enjoy a 25% discount on Brooks apparel and shoes purchased on the website using the promo code SSRCBR2021.
SSRC Community Notice Board
We have received a few requests from Striders to advertise their businesses on our various communications platforms. The committee has made a decision that a notice board will be put up at the club house at our time trials on Tuesday evening. Members may place an A5 advert on this board. The conditions for doing so are that you must be a paid-up SSRC member, the advert will only be displayed for 1 month, and that a committee member will need to physically sign the advert before it is placed. It will be your responsibility to put the advert on the notice board.
